The hills behind Irun are crowned by an impressive crag called Aiako Harria, a 860m peak with a distinctive summit and a long history of iron mining. The Penas marks the end of the Pyrenees and the start of the Basque mountains and has a wild deserted feel and the mining has left many old tunnels which we use to link hidden valleys on miles of secret singletrack.
We uplift in our van to gain us 550m’s in the morning although there are numerous options for an off road climb for those who choose to pedal. Starting with “Blue Microdot” an ancient mining trail that we have only just managed to reclaim from nature we contour across the granite slopes before dropping through dense forest and dark tunnels to the top of a huge waterfall. From here we wind our way back up to the top of the hill on tracks and paths and have lunch at a very scenic spot overlooking the Rio Bidasoa and coast. After lunch we will do the swoopy singletrack of “Self Harmer” before the long and challenging descent of “In Loving Memory” which drops us out at a Sidreria where you can enjoy some food and drink while your guide retrieves the van. You are on holiday after all and maybe want to save youself for some surfing or another activity!
