Overnight Mountain Bike Tour to Pamplona

BasqueMTB's first overnight mountain bike tour to Pamplona, using some fantastic singletrack descents and the Camino Santiago.
In June we ran our first overnight mountain bike tour to Pamplona, using some trails I know which link in with the Camino de Santiago. The idea was quite simple… on Wednesday morning, (instead of their rest day), I took my group to a high pass in the road a few miles from Pamplona. Leaving the group at just under 1000m, armed with my phone number and a GPS loaded with the track, felt quite strange but they were happy and looked bored of my pleas to “be really careful”! Read on for more photos and to see how their bike tour went…

I had chosen the descent quite carefully, it is a beautiful singletrack ride along a high ridge which drops down through the typical Mediterranean vegetation to the valley floor. The trail is rarely steep and the singletrack lasts for a long, long time, popping out of the forest occasionally to reveal stunning views to the valley below. When the guys reached the valley floor I had recommended a great restaurant which does a 3 course meal for €12; one of my favourites and a great way to fill the tank for the next part of the tour!

After lunch the guys only had to pick up the Camino de Santiago and enjoy biking the next 25km into Pamplona. This stretch of the Camino de Santiagois one of the nicest as the path crosses and recrosses the river, climbing and descending the valley walls, offering beautiful views and some nice mountain biking . The path passes some beautiful old villages and churches and continues all the way to the old gates with mark the entrance to the ancient part of Pamplona. The guys were totally amazed that the path let them bike so deep into the city, meaning they didn’t have to worry about traffic at all.

The group spent the night in Pamplona, enjoying the food and history there, and then in the morning they cycled back out to an arranged meeting point on the Camino de Santiago. I picked them up there and took them to another hill I know near Pamplona for a day of mountain biking before heading back to the Basque Country to continue our holiday.
