Best Mountain Bike Groupset – Update<\/p><\/div>

This is a very old post! If you are still using 10-speed then you have a lot of cheap options, however you should have a good look at upgrading. At least the brakes, the modern brakes have improved so much from the SRAM \/ Avid offerings back then. <\/p>

SUMMARY (For SRAM X9 10-Speed and Matchmakers):<\/span>SRAM is dead, long live Shimano!<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

+ Smooth shifting (when new).
+ Easy to set up and adjust.
<\/span><\/strong>– Big reliability issues with SRAM X9 10-Speed derailleurs, something I never had with 9-Speed.
– SRAM Matchmakers are weak and awkward to set up. I recommend avoiding!
– I have found Shimano XT (Dyna-sys) to be far nicer. (Only used short term).<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

When I bought my new Cove GSpot<\/a> I rushed to put the new SRAM X9 10-speed shifters and derailleurs <\/em><\/strong>onto the bike. Last week, 6 months later, and after only 3 months of mountain bike guiding<\/a>, I stripped all the SRAM stuff off my bike and replaced it with the Shimano XT 10-Speed shifters and derailleurs<\/a>. If you are interested to know why then just read on… <\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Conclusion (To save you reading it all!)
<\/span><\/strong>Shimano have really moved the game on with their newest generation of XT shifters and mechs;\u00a0if, like me, you haven’t tried them in a few years I really recommend you do. In my experience SRAM’s newest X9 10-Speed derailleur has serious reliability issues<\/strong><\/em> and I don’t want to invest in another one to see if I have just been unlucky (twice). The SRAM Matchmaker is a\u00a0flexy, brittle\u00a0piece of crap<\/em><\/strong>, don’t buy this under any circumstances… there I can’t say it any clearer than that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
