Trail > Building MTB Trails In The Basque Country and Building Community

Creating Trails on the Basque Coast

For years we’ve been working quietly building MTB trails in the Basque Country, creating and maintaining trails that bring people together and make mountain biking more accessible. What started as small projects with friends and riders has grown into something much bigger — a shared effort between local people, volunteers, and supporters who believe in the power of trails. The goal has always been the same: to make mountain biking accessible, sustainable, and part of daily life in our villages. This summer that effort reached a milestone: the opening of our first bike park on the Basque Coast and an exciting addition of MTB trails in the Basque Country.

Bizibide and Bikedasoa: Trails Built Together

In recent years this work has been formalised. Together with other passionate riders we created Bizibide and the non-profit Bikedasoa. These groups bring together volunteers, local councils, the regional government, and brands like Orbea, who all share the same vision for mountain biking in the Pyrenees and the Basque Country.

Lesaka was one of the first success stories, showing what’s possible when riders and communities work side by side. If you have ridden the Basque Coast recently with us you know the effect of this work, trails like Mikeltxo, El Cerro, 121 or Askati to name just a few trails.

Opening The First Bike Park Trails

This summer we celebrated the opening of our first bike park trails in the Basque Country. It’s a small project, compared to the network of trails we ride on our holidays, but for the village and the younger riders it’s been life-changing.

We believe that the addition of these MTB trails in the Basque Country will enhance the experience for riders from all over. Having a safe, fun place to ride means kids can fall in love with mountain biking, parents can ride with them, and a new generation of riders can grow up with trails on their doorstep. This has been very much a community project, driven forward by some serious passion in the local biking community.

The impact of these MTB trails in the Basque Country can be seen in the smiles of those who ride them.

What These Trails Mean for Riders and Communities

For our guests, the new bike park is just a small part of the riding we offer, most of your time with us will still be spent exploring the network of singletrack in the Pyrenees and the Basque Coast. But for the local community, this park is a big step forward. It shows that mountain biking can be more than a sport: it can connect people, bring life to villages, and create new opportunities for the future.

We are excited about the potential of more MTB trails in the Basque Country to help strengthen our biking community and believe that supporting these projects is crucial for promoting sustainable tourism.

Looking Ahead: More Mountain Bike Projects in the Pyrenees

This is just the beginning. With Bizibide and Bikedasoa, and thanks to the support of riders, volunteers, and partners, more projects are already being planned across the Basque Country and the Pyrenees.

At BasqueMTB we donate our time to these trail projects, and we also give a percentage of our profits to support other trail centres across the Pyrenees, in places like Tremp, Ainsa and Benasque. We also ensure that we use local services and locally owned hotels whenever we can. It’s small in the grand scheme of things, but it’s our way of giving something back to the places and people that make mountain biking possible.
