One of the best experiences of my life Karl

The base for our “luxury” mountain bike holidays is Hondarribia, a vibrant fishing village on the North coast of Spain, just outside San Sebastian. Here the Spanish Pyrenees mountains meet the Basque coast and the mountain biking is amazingly varied and beautiful. Add to that mix the culture and nightlife offered by nearby Bilbao and San Sebastian and we think that this is one of the best spots for a mountain bike holiday in the world.

The base for our “fully catered” mountain bike holidays is Doneztebe, a beautiful traditional Basque village around 20 minutes inland from Hondarribia. Doneztebe is surrounded by mountains and of course fantastic mountain biking! Evening meals are included with this package and the quality, and quantity, of the meals are perfect for hungry mountain bikers.

All our weeks are tailored to the guests and during the booking process we will discuss your requirements and make sure you are put in with a suitable group. Each week we aim to run two groups with a guide, driver, van and trailer each to allow people to choose the group which best suits their level.

Basque Coast Mountain Bike Holiday: Technical Level
basque coast mountain bike holiday technical level
The terrain in the Basque Country is very varied and we can offer mountain bike holidays for almost all levels, although due to the terrain here it isn´t suitable for beginners. The Basque Coast holiday offers a wider range of technical difficulty than our other trips and we can offer relaxed weeks for inexperienced riders or make the riding as difficult as you would ever want with very technical and steep descents.

Basque Coast Mountain Bike Holiday: Required Fitness
basque coast mountain bike holiday physicallevel
To enjoy our mountain bike holiday on the Basque Coast you will need a moderate level of fitness, there is very little flat ground in this part of Spain so every holiday we offer has some climbing. We have two dedicated vans and trailers offering uplift most days though, and we offer from 30 to 80% uplift depending on the group meaning daily climbs of between 300m and 1000m and descents of up to 3000m.
BasqueMTB tailored the ride to suit our abilities, was very patient and flexible throughout the day… the safety of the riders being of utmost importance. Hayden via Trip Advisor
Basque Coast Mountain Bike Holiday: Uplift
Typically we offer between 30% and 80% of uplift, this definitely isn´t a DH holiday though and we climb through the day and the trails are natural singletrack. Typically two days out of the holiday we offer a couple of uplifts of around 400-600m, one before lunch and the other after. The other 3 days we can offer as much as people would like. Often we opt to do a big, van assisted point to point rather than running shuttles and that involves more climbing but offers a more backcountry experience.

Basque Coast Mountain Bike Holiday: Riding Areas

Thanks to the help of local mountain bikers who have shared their local trails with us we have a massive area we can choose to ride in. The majority of our rides will be 10 to 30 minutes from our base in Hondarriba, however we have a huge variety of rides within an hour of our base and we often choose to do a day or two with a slightly longer drive to show off the variety in this part of Spain. Of course, if you don’t want to spend time in the van we have weeks and weeks worth of fantastic mountain biking close to our base!

Bilbao Airport is the best. Biarritz is also good. If you are flying from outside Europe you might arrive to Madrid or Barcelona and be able to fly on to Hondarribia Airport for the shortest transfer.

If you are coming by car then the ferry to Bilbao or Santander is a good option.

From Paris you can take the TGV direct to Hendaye.

For our Basque Coast mountain bike holidays you can arrive any time before 7pm. If you are arriving after that then we will book the airport hotel for you and get you the next day.

We pick up on Saturdays, and other days by arrangement, from San Sebastian, Hendaye or Biarritz Airport. There is a very easy airport transfer bus from Bilbao Airport which leaves from immediately outside arrivals and takes you directly to San Sebastian where we will pick you up. We will provide full instructions for the transfer bus and don’t worry, it really is very easy!

Preferred arrival day is Saturday, however we can often offer Sunday-Sunday trips or shorter breaks. Just get in touch to discuss availability.

Basque Coast Mountain Bike Holiday Accommodation

At basqueMTB we have a range of high class holiday accommodation. This gives us the flexibility to give you the perfect mountain bike holiday. We offer two main choices, either based in Hondarribia, right on the coast or based inland in one of the traditional Basque towns. Don´t worry we will ride the same fantastic trails regardless of which accommodation option you choose! If you want something specific then please get in touch and we can usually tailor the accommodation to your specific requirements. The high standard of our accommodation is something that people usually comment on.

“Luxury” Accommodation based in Hondarribia

Our “luxury” accommodation is based in a modern house in Hondarribia. It has its own small swimming pool in a large garden, stunning rooms and breathtaking views along the French coast. You can walk into the center of Hondarribia in around 10 minutes to visit the lively local bars. If you don’t fancy eating out then there is also a guest kitchen where you can cook your own dinner. There is an area to store and work on bikes along with tools. This is a very high quality accommodation package and is the main place we use. Breakfast is included in the price.

Who would it suit? Bikers who want top quality accommodation with huge views, swimming pool, self catering facilities and easy access to Hondarribia and the beach.

“Fully Catered” Accommodation based in Doneztebe

This package is based in Doneztebe, around 30 minutes from the coast in a car and we can only offer it for groups of 6 or more. The accommodation is owned by a friend of BasqueMTB and we are very confident that this will be a popular option for groups who are more interested in concentrating on the mountain biking and don´t need Hondarribia´s huge selection of restaurants and vibrant nightlife.

Doneztebe is a stunning, traditional Basque town, nestled in the stunning Basque mountains in an area we often ride in, there are several bars and restaurants and like all Basque towns it has a lively and interesting culture. The accommodation has recently been totally refurbished and finished to a really high standard, there is a huge bike workshop and across the road is the bar and restaurant where you will be fed. Each evening a meal will be prepared using the traditional Basque method of cooking over coals and using local ingredients, don´t expect to go home any thinner!

Who would it suit? Mountain bikers who want to bike all day and don´t want to party or have to think about where to eat.

Visiting Spain Alone?

All of our prices are calculated on the basis of two people sharing a room. We don’t charge a single person supplement, however we will aim to put two single people, of the same gender, into the same room. If you really don’t want this then we need to charge a single person supplement, please get in touch to ask about this. If you are traveling as an odd numbered group we will try to offer you the option of 3 to a room rather than sharing with a stranger, if we do that we will make sure there is a room large enough to make this comfortable! Depending on availability we can also offer an individual room, however due to the quality of the accommodation we use this isn’t a cheap option, full details are on the booking page.

Eating out in Hondarribia During Your Holiday

a town where one can spend the day murmuring “This is the best thing I’ve ever tasted,” New York Times
The New York Times recently voted Hondarribia one of the best places in the world to eat. That doesn’t mean that it has to be expensive! We generally eat lunches on the trail and the price varies for around €4 for a big sandwich to around €10-12 for a 3 course lunch with wine. Eating out in the evening is very varied and prices vary from around €10-15 for a smaller plate to around €15-25 for a 3 course meal with wine. For a special dinner you can eat in the best restaurants in Hondarribia for around €50 per person including wine and the quality of those restaurants is incredible. We can recommend and book restaurants for you and also give you help with translating the menus.

Non Biking

mountain bike holiday surfing

Basque MTB is located just outside San Sebastian, in Spain, a perfect location to offer great holidays for those who, for some strange reason, don’t want to throw themselves down mountains all day! While your loved ones risk life and limb mountain biking, you can choose lots of alternative holiday activities, from relaxing on the beach, shopping and being pampered with spa treatments to alternative thrills such as surfing. If you would like to, you can surf in Spain in the morning, have a guided tour of a local vineyard in the afternoon, and then dine in France in the evening.

Often holiday makers choose to mountain bike until the late afternoon, leaving them free to surf in the evening. We can organise board hire and lessons for anyone who is keen to give it a try in the evenings or on a day away from the bike. Alternatively if one of your group would rather not mountain bike we can organise a course of surf lessons during their holiday.

Here are some of the questions we are regularly asked about our mountain bike holidays. If you have any questions we are delighted to answer them, just get in touch.
Do you have an itinerary for your San Sebastian Mountain Bike Holidays?

We don’t have set itineraries for our holidays. We have dozens of trails to choose from and we match each day to suit the mountain bikers we have. The only thing common to all our holidays is that we ride 5 days a week, with one rest day to explore the local towns.

I don't want to do a week's mountain bike holiday, can I do a shorter break?

Yes, we can offer shorter breaks. We don´t guide on Wednesday and Saturday but we can offer shorter trips and based around that. If you arrive on a day when we are guiding you might have to have a drink in San Sebastian and wait until we are able to pick you up though!

What are the group sizes on a typical mountain bike holiday?

During our mountain bike holidays we tend to keep the groups small. The average size of our group is 5-6 people. If you can come in a group of 6 people or more and want your own guide then we can do that. We typically have 8-12 people a week, supported by two dedicated guides, two drivers who can also guide and two vans with dedicated bike trailers.

How do you manage different technical levels on your mountain bike holidays?

During the booking process we guide people towards a week where the other guests are at a similar level. Obviously this isn’t totally accurate so we run our holidays with two guides so we can offer a harder and an easier group each day.

My partner doesn't mountain bike but would like to join our holiday, is this possible?

Yes, this part of Spain is perfect for non-biking partners, check out our holiday pages for more information.

What is the weather like in that part of Spain?

The weather on the Basque coast is generally amazing, however the price for having mountains right on the coast is that we get some rain. Generally if the rain comes from the north it all falls on the coast and we can drive a short distance south into Spain and enjoy sunny and dry conditions. If the rain comes from the south then usually the Basque coast remains dry while the rest of Spain gets wet. It is very uncommon for the weather to be bad in all the areas we can choose to ride in, however if that does happen then we take some comfort in the fact that it generally means most of Spain, France and northern Italy are affected!

Temperatures remain moderate through the whole season, averaging around 25°C in the hottest months of July and August. Occasionally we will get higher temperatures of around 30°C-35°C for a day or two in August but it never lasts and we can ride high up or next to the coast to escape the heat. In August the Basque Country is full of holiday makers from France and Spain due to it’s great climate.

What bike / tyres / brake pads do you recommend for this part of Spain?

To try and make this subject a bit interactive we have a facebook page dedicated to this. Please have a look here, (and we always appreciate people liking our page!).
