Awesome! One of the best mountain bike experiences I’ve ever had, and I’ve had many! I couldn’t recommend basquemtb highly enough
I can’t really imagine how this holiday could have been better! excellent guides and the trails were world beating!
We were hoping for two basic things in an backcountry ride outfitter: Take us on amazing trails and handling all the local logistics. Basque MTB scored 20/20

Backcountry Pyrenees Mountain Bike Holidays

The mountain biking across the Pyrenees is something special and the Spanish side is largely undiscovered by riders outside of Spain. Awesome, Professional, Some of the best biking anywhere in the world. Great overall package on and off the bike. Spectacular scenery and incredible trails. We’ll be back (again) for sure. Gavin

We will ride perfect, unspoilt singletrack that local mountain bikers have been kind enough to share with Basque MTB which few people ever get to ride and will venture deep into some undiscovered mountain biking locations boasting both stunning scenery and riding. We will also ride “Zona Zero” in Ainsa, an area that friends of Basque MTB have developed which offers some stunning mountain bike trails right in the heart of the Pyrenees.

It´s going to blow people´s minds
Chris Ball talking about the EWS in Zona Zero
This isn´t a point to point trip, rather a multi center holiday, designed to ride the best, and most diverse, trails in the Spanish Pyrenees. There will be van uplift to help most mornings as we ride high on the Pyrenees mountains and deep in the gorges which are scattered across the area, riding miles and miles of technical singletrack. During this week’s mountain bike holiday we generally get over 10,000m of descending with around 2,000 – 3000m of climbing.

Put simply this is some of the best mountain biking available on the planet.

Mountain Holidays Pyrenees Calendar

Our Backcountry Pyrenees mountain bike holiday is available in March, April, May, October and November.

All our weeks are tailored to the guests and during the booking process we will discuss your requirements and make sure you are put in with a suitable group. Each week we aim to run two groups with a guide, driver, van and trailer each to allow people to choose the group which best suits their level.

Backcountry Pyrenees Mountain Bike Holiday: Technical Level
backcountry pyrenees mountain bike holiday
The trails on this mountain bike holiday are going to be advanced and you can expect unrelenting technical singletrack, rocky switchbacks and some exposure. The climbing will be challenging in places, although we will use plenty of van uplift, and expect to be pushing your bike for some sections. The sort of rider who will get the most from this tour will be very comfortable on any of the trail centre trails in the UK and maybe already have tried the Basque Coast mountain bike holiday. The trails aren´t as tough as the toughest trails on the Basque Coast, however there aren´t the options for easy trails like on the Basque Coast
Effortless excellence! Relaxed and highly competant guides, superb, varied trails and stress-free accomodation and transport made this a very special trip. Marcus
Backcountry Pyrenees Mountain Bike Holiday: Required Fitness
backcountry pyrenees mountain bike holiday

A good level of fitness is required although we will use van uplift to help with the climbs. Some climbs will be sustained and some days my require some pushing or carrying of the bike. What is most tiring though are the descents, some of which are very long, with up to 20km of singletrack.

Through the week we will descend over 10,000m and climb around 2-3000m..
What can I say, we’ll be back! Loved every minute of it. Easily the best mountain bike holiday (or any holiday for that matter) that I’ve ever been on. In fifteen years on mountain bike holidays, this is the best by a country mile.. Steve

Backcountry Pyrenees Mountain Bike Holiday: Riding Areas

The area of the Backcountry Pyrenees holiday will vary from year to year and group to group. There is so much riding in this part of Spain, and it is all so good, that we will choose the areas we ride in to make the best holiday possible. We choose the trip based on the weather, the group and we are constantly receiving updates on trail conditions from local riders so if we hear a descent is riding really well then we might change our plans to include it in our trip.

Bilbao Airport is the best. Biarritz is also good. If you are flying from outside Europe you might arrive to Madrid or Barcelona and be able to fly on to Hondarribia Airport for the shortest transfer.

If you are coming by car then the ferry to Bilbao or Santander is a good option.

From Paris you can take the TGV direct to Hendaye.

For our Backcountry Pyrenees trips we need to pick up in San Sebastian, or Biarritz airport around 2pm. This means if you arrive to Bilbao you need to get in around midday.

We pick up on Saturday in San Sebastian at 2pm or thereabouts. If you need to discuss arrival information then please just get in touch before booking flights.

The Backcountry Pyrenees starts and finishes on Saturday. Due to the logistics shorter trips aren´t possible.

well thought out routes, superb accommodation… A truly EPIC adventure

The accommodation we use for our Backcountry Pyrenees mountain bike holiday will be a mixture of high quality local bed and breakfasts, upmarket hostals and stunning, “rider owned” apartments, all chosen for their character and to keep us closest to the very best mountain bike trails.

We pride ourselves of the high quality of eating that you will experience on our mountain bike holidays! We love to eat and also enjoy trying the good wines and we relish the chance to share the great traditional Spanish places that we have found with our guests. We can’t guarantee that you will lose weight on our trips!

We include two packed lunches and four evening meals, on other days lunches will cost around €5-10 each day and dinners will cost from €10 to €25 each night.

Visiting Spain Alone?

All of our prices are calculated on the basis of two people sharing a room. We don’t charge a single person supplement, however we will aim to put two single people, of the same gender, into the same room. If you really don’t want this then we need to charge a single person supplement, please get in touch to ask about this. If you are traveling as an odd numbered group we will try to offer you the option of 3 to a room rather than sharing with a stranger, if we do that we will make sure there is a room large enough to make this comfortable! Depending on availability we can also offer an individual room, however due to the quality of the accommodation we use this isn’t a cheap option, full details are on the booking page.

Basque Coast: Extra Holiday Information

Due to the logistics day trips or shorter breaks are not available on this trip.

Bike hire costs €290 per week and €60 per day. We cannot hire mountain bikes without guiding. This year we are hiring the fantastic Orbea Rallon and Occam 29ers.

Non Biking

Really the Backcountry Pyrenees isn´t the best holiday for non-bikers. Each day we are riding all day, with very little downtime, and we stay in really backcountry places where non-riders won´t have much to do. If you are looking for a holiday with you and a non riding partner then you should really consider the fantastic riding on the Basque Coast. If someone wanted a day off biking then that is something we can do on the Backcountry Pyrenees. In the middle of the week we stay in a beautiful medieval town with a lovely spa and we can organise a really nice day off the bike if anyone fancies it.
