The mountain bike holidays which we organise with GreatRock came about after a visit to one of Ed Oxley’s mountain bike skill courses in the UK. Ed Oxley’s training impressed us so much that we decided to invite him to run a week-long mountain bike holiday here in Spain, based around his skills training program. You only have to watch Ed ride to see that he’s got the technique sorted, he pumps and flows, carrying speed with ease no matter what the terrain. This isn’t (just) natural ability though, Ed understands how to make a mountain bike do these things and because of that he can explain them to you. Watching mountain bikers progress their skills over their week-long holiday is fantastic and everyone leaves with a real sense of achievement. We manage these mountain bike holidays carefully to ensure we get a good balance between developing the skills, mountain biking and relaxing. We ride 6 days out of the week, however we use plenty of uplift in the van to make sure that this is manageable. The holidays are above all fun, no standing around all day listening to lectures about how to corner, just fun mountain biking with Ed’s skills training worked in to each day. We also make sure that there is plenty of time to experience the culture, food and drink that this part of Spain offers in abundance. We offer two types of mountain bike holidays with Great Rock, two weeks on Spain’s Basque Coast and two weeks in the Backcountry Pyrenees.
We offer four separate mountain bike holidays in conjuction with GreatRock, two based on the Basque Coast of Spain and two in the Pyrenees.
Basque Coast Mountain Bike Holiday:
6th-13th July and 13th-20st July.
Backcountry Pyrenees Mountain Bike Holiday:
16th-23th of March and 12th-19th of October.
Basque Coast: Technical Level
Basque Coast: Required Fitness
Moderate. We will use our van for around 70% of the climbing, however there will be some climbing and expect to have to push your bike for some sections.
Pyrenees Mountain Bike Holiday: Technical Level
Advanced. We recommend that the Backcountry Pyrenees Mountain Bike holiday is best for people who have completed one of our Basque Coast holidays or some of GreatRock’s skills courses in the UK. This holiday will be more focused on riding and developing skills rather than starting from scratch.
Pyrenees Mountain Bike Holiday: Required Fitness
Moderate. Again we use the van for around 70% of the climbing but there will be some days with sustained uphills and we will be pushing our bikes for sections. In addition some of the descents are very long, with at least one around 20km, which is also physically demanding.
Accommodation Options for Our Mountain Bike Holidays on Spain’s Basque Coast
Our Basque Coast Mountain Bike Skills Weeks are based in Hondarribia.
Our mountain bike skills holidays are based in our “Urban” accommodation, a modern house in Hondarribia. It has its own small swimming pool in a large garden, stunning rooms and breathtaking views along the French coast. You can walk into the center of Hondarribia in around 10 minutes to visit the lively local bars. If you don’t fancy eating out then there is also a guest kitchen where you can cook your own dinner. We chose this accommodation because we feel it offers a perfect base for your mountain bike holidays, our guests seem to agree!
All the rooms are shared with two people to a room.
Backcountry Pyrenees Mountain Bike Holiday Accommodation
The accommodation will be a mixture of high quality local bed and breakfasts, upmarket hostals and stunning, “rider owned” apartments, all chosen for their character and to keep us closest to the very best trails.
All accommodation is shared with two people to a room whenever possible and with shared rooms in the hostal.

|MOUNTAIN BIKE SKILLS HOLIDAYS||Cost|
The prices for our skills trips are higher than our normal holidays because in addition to two guides we will have Ed providing the skills training element. Our maximum group size is 6 meaning that there is a 1:2 ratio of guides to guests which we feel is important.
Mountain Bike Skills Holidays: What is Included?
- Guiding and skills training on 6 days
- Evening meals on the Backcountry Pyrenees mountain bike holiday only.
- Airport transfers. Due to the fact we have lots of individual people arriving from all over the world for these trips it is difficult to pick everyone up at the airport. There is a very easy and cheap transfer bus to take people from the airport to San Sebastian and we ask everyone to take this. Full details will be provided.
- Lunches and evening meals on the Basque Coast Mountain Bike Holiday.
- Lunches on the Backcountry Pyrenees mountain bike holiday.

I don’t want to do a week’s mountain bike holiday, can I do a shorter break?
Due to the fact progression in everyone’s riding during these holidays we cannot offer shorter breaks.
What are the group sizes on a typical mountain bike holiday?
During our mountain bike holidays we tend to keep the groups small and for our skills holidays we take this even further with a ratio of one guide to two people.
My partner doesn’t mountain bike but would like to join our holiday, is this possible?
Yes, this part of Spain is perfect for non-biking partners, check out our Non-Biking page for some of the activities on offer. Generally the price for a non biking partner is around 65% of the full price but please get in touch to confirm that.
